What is a Will?
A will is one of most important things a person will ever do in their life, because it is a document that is made solely to express exactly what you want done with all the assets you worked a lifetime to amass. Only through a will can your exact requests be expected to be fulfilled; if you don’t write a will, your objectives are ignored and the law provides who will inherit your assets. That one child you want to disinherit will never be disinherited, for example, without a will.
What You Need to Know
It is very important to have an attorney, often in cooperation with a CPA, to assist you in planning for your estate to ensure that what you want to have occur with your assets does in fact occur, but also that tax consequences of giving are mimimized.
Customizing a will includes conversations about advanced health care directives, powers of attorney, and other documents related to your assets, however varied they are, and your family situation.
